Peugeot has announced a collaboration with the underwater research programme Under The Pole to help design the next generation of its underwater habitat, Capsule II. The new structure, due to launch in 2026, will allow scientists to live and work for extended periods under the sea while studying marine life and ecosystems.

What is Under the Pole?

Under the Pole is a scientific exploration programme based in Concarneau, France, founded in 2008 by Ghislain Bardout and Emmanuelle Périé-Bardout. Its goal is to protect the ocean through research and public awareness. The current capsule allows teams to stay underwater for up to three days, giving them a better chance to observe marine life in its natural environment.

What is capsule II, and why is Peugeot involved?

Capsule II is the next step in Under The Pole's research work. While the current capsule has been useful, scientists have reported limitations with comfort, space and functionality. Peugeot, along with the Stellantis Design Studio, is stepping in to help redesign the capsule's interior and improve the living and working conditions.

What will Peugeot be working on?

Peugeot will focus on redesigning both the interior and exterior layout of the capsule to make better use of space and improve usability. The aim is to create a more comfortable and practical environment for the scientists who will be spending time underwater.

This redesign includes developing more efficient living spaces that suit the needs of different missions and crew members. Peugeot also plans to recommend new materials that are more durable and pleasant to use in the challenging underwater setting.

Additionally, Peugeot hopes to improve technical features such as communication systems, connectivity and display screens, drawing on the brand's experience in vehicle design, particularly its i-Cockpit dashboard system. The goal is to enhance comfort, safety and functionality in a confined and demanding environment.

When will the new capsule be ready?

Development has already started on Capsule II, and a launch date is pencilled in for summer 2026. During this project's first phase, the designers will review the feedback from the scientists and divers who used the original capsule. This information will help the team identify which aspects need the most improvement.

Once this research stage is completed, the designers will begin creating and evaluating detailed 3D models, followed by the engineering and production stages. The final version of the capsule will integrate the proposed design elements from Peugeot and Stellantis Design Studio, resulting in a structure that will better support the day-to-day needs of underwater researchers.
