Nissan has now unveiled its sixth-generation Micra and, as previously unveiled, it's a fully electric car. The five-door hatchback will be available with two battery sizes and shares much of its underpinnings and interior with the Renault 5 E-Tech electric.

What's new about this Nissan Micra?

In short, everything. The Nissan Micra will only be available as a fully electric model, and it forms part of a wave of new cars that Nissan plans to introduce over the next 18 months. These will include a fully electric Juke and an all-new Leaf EV reimagined as a crossover.

Nissan has been able to tap into its alliance with Renault in order to create the Micra, though its designers have given it a distinctly different look with characterful circular LED daytime running lights at the front. As you approach the car the rings animate and the LED headlights at their centre perform a wink of sorts.

Buyers will get a broad choice of options when it comes to configuring their Nissan Micra. There are six exterior colours that can be had monotone or mixed with a silver or black contrasting roof. Two alloy wheel designs and one further wheel cover are available.

Similar ring-shaped lights to the front are found at the rear and they're linked by a black strip across the boot lid that carries the Nissan wordmark. There's a useful 326 litres of boot space available while dropping the 40:60 split-fold rear seats boosts the cargo capacity to 1,106 litres.

“In designing the sixth generation of the Micra, we've celebrated all the values that have historically made it so popular - and opened a new chapter for Micra as an EV. The exterior has an audacious and playful appearance on first look but has a stance which gives it a solid presence on the road. We've also been able to integrate delightful details into the design, which owners will love. We're proud to have been able to bring the Micra into the EV age,” said Giovanny Arroba, Vice President of Nissan Design Europe

What about the rest of the interior?

Nissan has borrowed heavily from Renault for the dashboard of the Micra, with an all-but-identical layout and setup save for some Nissan badging on the steering wheel. It's a good design regardless, with a pair of 10.1-inch digital displays, one that's configurable for the instruments and the other as a touchscreen for the infotainment system, angled slightly towards the driver.

The infotainment system is Google-based which brings several benefits, especially when it comes to route planning and charging stops. The system can activate battery pre-conditioning (where fitted) when it knows a charging stop is planned in order to maximise the charging speed. There's also a NissanConnect smartphone app that enables owners to cool or warm the cabin and check on other parameters of the car. The Micra will also be capable of over-the-air updates without the need to visit a dealership, ensuring that its software and other functions are always up to date.

Alongside the Google-based operating system there is wireless Android Auto and Apple CarPlay for smartphone mirroring, plus regular Bluetooth. A wireless charging pad on the centre console is useful, and we love the symbol of Mount Fuji made into the material next to it, referencing Nissan's homeland.

Two USB-C ports and a 12-volt power socket mean plenty of charging options for devices. There are two ISOFIX mounting points in the back for child seats.

What's the electric range of the Nissan Micra?

Buyers can choose from two battery sizes in the Nissan Micra. The smaller is a 40kWh unit that delivers a WLTP driving range of 310 kilometres. A 52kWh battery provides up to 408 kilometres of driving range and also gets a 100kW DC-charging rate.

Fast DC charging of the smaller 40kWh battery is restricted to 80kW but due to the size differences both batteries will charge from 10 to 80 per cent in around the same 30 minutes at their maximum speeds. Micra owners will also be able to power devices from the car's drive battery thanks to its V2L (Vehicle-to-Load) capability. Everything from a laptop to an electric lawnmower or vacuum cleaner could be powered via an adaptor connected to the charging socket.

Talk to me about performance

The new Nissan Micra isn't quite a hot hatch, nor is it purporting to be, but it isn't all that heavy by electric car standards. It tips the scales at 1,400kg - or 1,524kg for the larger battery variant. Its suspension consists of independent struts and passive dampers at the front and a multilink arrangement at the rear, and all versions ride on 18-inch wheels as standard. Nissan confirms that the suspension settings are unchanged from that of the Renault 5, which bodes well for the Micra's driving dynamics.

In performance terms, the 40kWh Micra gets a 122hp/225Nm electric motor driving the front wheels. With the larger 52kWh battery there is a 150hp/245Nm motor instead. A heat pump is standard to improve efficiency.

How much is the Nissan Micra in Ireland and when will it be available?

Pricing for the Nissan Micra in Ireland is still in the process of being finalised, however we do expect it to be competitively priced in relation to its most direct rivals. For reference, the Renault 5 E-Tech electric starts from €25,995 after government incentives.

We'll be getting behind the wheel of the new Nissan Micra later this year ahead of its arrival in Irish dealerships, expected before the “261” plate is introduced in January 2026.
