Nissan has breathed fresh life into its Micra 350SR with a one-off restomod version to celebrate the car's 23rd birthday. The madcap, mid-engined hot hatchback was a tour de force for the brand in the early 2000s, and the restomod hopes to pay tribute to that, while also marketing the next-generation Micra.
What was the 350SR anyway?
Back in 2002, Nissan commissioned a hooligan-spec hatchback based on the then-current 'K12' Micra and set about changing almost everything. A modified version of the 3.5-litre V6 petrol engine from a Murano SUV was dropped into the car and placed between the axles to create a mid-engined hyper-hatch that produced around 300hp.
With only 1,200kg to move, it was ballistically quick and set about a publicity tour that included spells with motoring magazines and on display at events.
So, what has Nissan done with it?
The new restomod version is supposed to be a “light touch” on the original, with Nissan Design Europe's team developing a new exterior that nods to the car's original red-and-white livery but brings it up to date. That twist comprises the use of liquid silver base paint with fresh blue graphics based on Nissan's more modern iconography. The grille and lower parts are finished in gloss black, while the refurbished 18-inch RAYS alloys have also been painted black.
LED headlights with semi-circular daytime running lights have been fitted, too, while there are new seats and harnesses for safety. There's also a nine-inch touchscreen that wasn't available on the original car, complete with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto technology.
Why now?
Partly because there's a new, all-electric Micra on the way, and partly because two and three in Japanese are ni and san - much like the manufacturer's name. So the 350SR restomod is here to create a bit of buzz around the humble Micra nameplate.
So is this thing going on sale?
No, it's still very much a showpiece, albeit one that has been reborn for the modern age, and there's only one example. However, the new electric Micra is expected to arrive in the not-too-distant future, and promises plenty of more customer-friendly features.
