Mercedes-Benz has opened the Irish order books for its new G-Class models, which start at the punchy price of €166,280. Updated with fresh design touches and a new engine range, which includes petrol, diesel and electric options, the new Geländewagen comes in a choice of three different trim levels.

Minor updates

Externally, the new G-Class is set apart by its fresh front and rear bumpers, as well as the new grille with four horizontal louvres, rather than the previous three. There's new cladding on the A-pillar beside the windscreen, too, and there's a spoiler lip on the roof edge. But trademark features, such as the rear-mounted spare wheel and side-opening rear door, as well as the boxy silhouette, have remained untouched.

Inside, meanwhile, Mercedes-Benz has improved the insulation to reduce the amount of road and wind noise in the cabin, and there's a slightly elevated seat position. There's stitched leather upholstery, too, and customers get ash and walnut trim inserts as standard.

More power

The new G-Class is offered with a choice of three different fuel types, with the more conventional petrol and diesel offerings partnered for the first time by a new electric version. All are immensely powerful and designed to be capable off-road, with Mercedes promising the 4x4 has lost none of its uncompromising competence over rough terrain.

As ever, the car still sits on a ladder-frame chassis, with the body bolted on top, but Mercedes-Benz has still brought some of the 21st Century into the range. The electric powertrain will be the likely choice for those concerned about running costs, while diesel might be better for longer journeys. Even the combustion-powered G-Classes, though, are available with Mercedes' mild-hybrid EQ technology, which is designed to save fuel.

Even the entry level car - the G 580 - has Mercedes' EQ technology on board, helping to keep emissions in check while still giving the hulking 4x4 a massive 587hp.

On sale now

Mercedes-Benz dealers across Ireland are now taking orders for the new G-Class, which is offered in a choice of three trims. The base version is the Exclusive, and that's joined by the Superior and the sportily styled AMG Line models. Prices start at €166,280 for the G 580 with EQ technology in basic Exclusive trim.
