Five-door Audi A1 revealed

Here are the very first details of Audi's new five-door A1 Sportback.

Audi has announced that it will be launching a five-door version of its premium supermini the Audi A1. Dubbed the A1 Sportback (Audi-speak for five-door) the new car is likely to cost less than €1,000 more than its three-door sibling, but will probably go on to be the bigger seller thanks to added practicality.

The new car will be six millimetres taller and wider to give occupants more head- and shoulder room but despite the addition of two extra doors is the exact same length as the current A1. Despite this Audi says the A1 Sportback has the same 270-litre boot as the three-door model. As standard the car will come with seating for four but a third rear seat, complete with headrest and full seatbelt, will be available as a no-cost option.

Buyers will be able to choose between three TFSI petrol and two TDI diesel engines with power outputs ranging from 86- to 185hp. All versions except the 1.6 TDI with the seven-speed S-tronic transmission and the range topping petrol model will be equipped with stop-start to lower emissions.

Although Audi Ireland has yet to release specifications, it is expected that the entry level versions will come equipped with manual air conditioning, remote-controlled central locking, electric windows and mirrors and alloy wheels. Sport models may add 16-inch alloy wheels, sports suspension and seats, along with Bluetooth. The top S line Sportbacks could feature a leather/cloth interior, 17-inch alloys, S line sports suspension and other styling details.

A choice of twelve paint finishes will be available including the new Samoa Orange that is exclusive to the A1 Sportback and on request Audi will paint the roof in one of three contrasting colours. Audi will also offer climate control, tinted windows, heated front seats and a multifunction sport steering wheel, which can also be equipped with shift paddles for the S tronic automatic gearbox.

As soon as Irish details have been released we'll update this story.
