Lexus has given its electric crossover a comprehensive overhaul.

While the all-electric Lexus RZ hasn't been on sale in Ireland for long, there's already a significantly updated one on the way, focusing - according to its maker - on driving pleasure, charging, range, performance and design. There's even a version with a manual gearbox. Kind of...

I think you better explain that

An electric car doesn't need a gearbox at all due to the broad power band and maximum instant torque of electric motors, but changing gears is something driving enthusiasts actively enjoy, so Lexus developed its Interactive Manual Drive system. This is designed to simulate the feel and sound of driving a car with an eight-speed gearbox.

The driver can 'take control' using paddles behind the steering wheel if they wish (we presume there's a manual mode they must select) and there's even a virtual rev limiter so the driver has to learn how to perfect the timing of their gearchanges. To assist with that there's a shift guide meter in the instruments, though the synthetic engine sound no doubt also helps.

It should be noted that this feature is only offered on the new RZ 550e F Sport derivative, which marks the first time F Sport design has been applied to the Lexus RZ. It features distinctive exterior and interior changes to help it stand out from the rest of the range, plus a dual-motor, all-wheel-drive setup than can produce up to 408hp.

What are the other models in the RZ lineup?

Significant changes have been made to the entire electrical system of the RZ in the name of efficiency and range, though Lexus is a little coy on the figures as apparently, they have yet to be finalised.

We do know that the new RZ features a slightly larger battery pack than before. It's now a 77kWh unit (72kWh is usable), which, when combined with the efficiency improvements, is expected to result in an extra 100 kilometres of range. For reference, the RZ 450e we tested in 2023 came with an official range of 395km.

That model is replaced by the new RZ 500e, using two electric motors for all-wheel drive and up to 380hp. Below it is the lone single-motor model, the new RZ 350e. Its motor peaks at 224hp and it's expected to be the biggest seller in Ireland.

All cars can charge at up to 22kW on three-phase AC chargers, or 150kW on DC outlets, while charging in lower temperatures should be faster than before thanks to a battery pre-conditioning system.

Any other technology of note?

Both the RZ 500e and the RZ 550e get an evolution of the Lexus Direct4 drive control system, which dynamically controls the torque output from each of the two motors in a bid to optimise the front-to-rear power distribution for any given moment. This applies to accelerating, braking and turning, even when traction is not an issue.

And the RZ also has a novel steer-by-wire system, denoted by the unusual yoke-like steering wheel. This only turns through a 200-degree arc, meaning the driver never has to take their hands off it, regardless of how tight a corner is.

Instead, the steering ratio and directness are adjusted dynamically according to speed. So, for example, it shouldn't take much steering at low speeds to manoeuvre, but the system is less sensitive on the motorway in the name of stability. There is no physical link between the steering wheel and the front wheels.

Anything else new inside?

The panoramic roof can be “dimmed” now, while the ambient lighting features a new dynamic shadow effect that is designed to project “changing patterns that evoke the passage of time, fostering an emotional, comfortable connection with the car's occupants.” Riiiight...

No doubt the passengers will be glad of the extra soundproofing built into the vehicle, plus a cool new door panel trim called 'Ultrasuede'. This features laser-processed graphics and is partially made from a plant-based material.

How much is the new Lexus RZ in Ireland?

That's an unknown for now, as is the lineup to be offered to Irish buyers. For reference, the outgoing RZ 300e costs from €65,150, and the new one won't be here until the tail end of 2025, so really it's a “261” car.
