Gold Tata 'worth' €3.45 million

A one-off Tata Nano covered in jewels and gold cost nearly €3.5 million.

Tata has unveiled a gold-plated version of its cheapest car, the Nano, in Mumbai, with an estimated worth of €3.45 million.

The gold Nano was hand built by 30 craftsmen and bears 80 kg of 22 carat gold, 15 kg of silver and a countless number of gemstones.

Widely known as the world's cheapest car, the standard Nano can be bought as little as €1,500 depending on the market. Anyone wishing to purchase this one, will be disappointed, though, because Tata is using it purely as a marketing tool to mark 5,000 years of Indian craftsmanship.

The unveiling comes after sales of the standard Tata Nano hit an all time low, as only 1,202 Nano models were sold throughout August. Although previously successful, Nano sales had started to decline amongst safety concerns, after a number of them caught fire.
