Mercedes has described the model as a "redefinition" of SUV luxury.

Mercedes-Benz's latest SUV offering - the EQS - has arrived in Ireland as the latest addition to the German company's all-electric EQ range.

Four models will be available at launch: the entry-level EQS 450+ and three all-wheel-drive models, the EQS 450 4Matic, EQS 500 4Matic and EQS 580 4Matic. Irish prices start at €139,880 and rise to €168,265 for top-spec models.

Interior and tech

While the EQS SUV's interior features much of the same appointments found in the EQS saloon, customers can opt to fit a third row of seating in the back, increasing the SUV's passenger capacity to seven persons.

Up front, the dash-covering infotainment screen, described as a "hyperscreen" by the carmaker, features its latest MBUX system. A notable new addition is an artificial intelligence program with a capacity for learning.

The 'Hey Mercedes' voice activation technology is also included, now able to support 27 languages. Storage space has been prioritised, with a large storage compartment located below the centre console and more stowage spaces throughout the interior.

The EQS SUV comes equipped with several standard and optional features designed for ease of driving and safety - such as wireless device connectivity, lane-keeping assist, blind-spot monitoring, collision prevention systems and automated warnings and interventions in the case of emergencies.

Powertrains and drive

Depending on equipment and specification, the EQS SUV can cover up to 639km on a single charge, with a power output of up to 815hp. Mercedes claims that the coefficient of drag for the SUV is as low as 0.2.

With a fast-charging system to hand, an extra 250km of power can be delivered in just 15 minutes. The new battery management software also allows system and software updates to be transmitted over-the-air.

All-wheel-drive versions feature an off-road driving mode, which raises the suspension and can also alter the behaviour of the powertrain. Non-4Matic versions are fitted with adjustable air suspension and a rear-axle steering system as standard.

Electrical consumption varies depending on specification. The base 450+ uses as low as 18.6kWh per 100km, while the 450 4Matic's best figure is 20.2kWh.
