Bigger body for the new Mercedes-Benz E-Class wagon.

Mercedes has shown off the new E-Class estate, which will go on sale in Ireland before the end of this year.

Seventh generation E-Class Estate

It's the seventh generation of the E-Class estate, but it may well be the last; Mercedes has previously said that it is canning estate models to focus on SUVs.

This one is bigger than the previous model - 28mm wider and with a 22mm-long wheelbase.

There's a massive 616 litres of boot space with the seats up, which is better by far than what you'd get in a BMW 5 Series Touring or Audi A6 Avant, but the Volvo V90 beats it.

Sadly, the plug-in hybrid model's boot volume falls to 460 litres.

100km electric range

That PHEV will likely be the most popular model for Ireland and will have an electric-only range of 100km thanks to a 21kWh battery.

The rest of the engine line-up is carried over from the saloon version, which means a choice of four and six-cylinder petrol engines with 48-volt mild-hybrid assistance.

This estate E-Class also has one major advantage over its saloon counterpart - standard rear air suspension to handle heavy loads better. Full all-around air suspension will be available as an option. The Estate's maximum towing weight will be 2,100kg.

AI software assistant

Mercedes says that the car's styling has been influenced by the EQS electric car, as evidenced by a few gloss black exterior panels dotted around.

Inside, unsurprisingly, it gets the same twin-screen (with an optional third-screen 'Hyperscreen' layout) interior as the E-Class saloon, and it will come with the option of built-in entertainment apps, including TikTok, Angry Birds and Zoom. The system also includes an AI assistant, which learns your habits and can help you get to the on-screen menu you need more quickly.

The E-Class Estate will also have a remote parking mode, which means it can head off and find a parking space without you, but that will require legislation to be changed for it to be allowed here.
