VW’s best-selling model features active suspension and a revised interior.

The next-generation Volkswagen Tiguan has been revealed by its maker undergoing testing in camouflage. We're told it will have an all-new interior, the option of an active suspension system and a whole new range of powertrain options among its many upgrades.

The brand's best-selling model for several years, the current generation of Tiguan, has been in production since 2016. The new version will debut this autumn, with an official release planned for 2024.

The new Tiguan will utilise Volkswagen's latest modular transverse technology platform, known as 'MQB evo' by the carmaker.

According to Kai Grünitz, a Volkswagen board member responsible for technical development, said that the platform offers "a new generation of plug-in hybrid drives with electric ranges of up to 100 kilometres, probably the best active chassis control in its segment and an equally new and intuitive infotainment system."

New tech and interior

The new Tiguan will be one of the first cars in its class to come equipped with HD matrix headlights - albeit as an optional extra. Developed for both the Tiguan and the larger Touareg, Volkswagen describes the headlights as that of a "premium-class model".

Inside, the Tiguan has a new infotainment system, with a 15-inch screen displaying navigation, music and climate control. The interior is fitted with new materials, more noise insulation, and a redesigned centre console to offer more storage space.

A new physical rotary 'Driving Experience Control' feature is mounted in the centre console to allow for the selection of driving modes, adjusting the radio volume or the ambient colours in the car's cockpit.

The redesigned seats can be upgraded to 'ergoActive' units as an optional extra. These are available with heating and ventilation, pneumatic four-way lumbar adjustment and a 10-chamber, four-way massage function in the backrests.

The Tiguan's boot volume has grown by 33 litres to 648 litres as its body lengthens by three centimetres.

All models will be fitted with a 'DSG' automatic gearbox, operated by a new steering column-mounted lever - though paddle shifters behind the steering wheel will remain available for manual control.

Updated suspension and powertrains

Electronically controlled suspension will also be available on the new Tiguan. Buyers can opt for two-valve shock absorbers as part of the DCC Pro package.

All Tiguans will leave the factory with a 'vehicle dynamics manager' as standard, a system first seen on the current Golf GTI. If the DCC Pro package is fitted, the manager controls the electronic differential lock and the shock absorbers.

The dynamics manager can make certain braking interventions on specific wheels and adjust the shock absorbers' firmness, which Volkswagen says leads to "more neutral, stable, agile and precise" handling characteristics.

Several different powertrains are available in the new Tiguan. Turbodiesel (TDI), turbocharged petrol (TSI), and mild-hybrid turbocharged petrol (eTSI) will all be offered, as well as a plug-in hybrid option (eHybrid).

The plug-in hybrid powertrain has been thoroughly reworked, with its electric range increased to up to 100 kilometres on certain trim levels. The AC charging speed promises to be faster on eHybrid models than before, while DC charging will also be available as standard for the first time.

Irish specifications and prices for the 2024 Volkswagen Tiguan have yet to be confirmed.
