Stunning new Kia concept

Is Kia really considering taking the fight to Audi, BMW and Mercedes?

If you didn't notice the Kia badges or the 'tiger' grille in the images above you'd be forgiven for thinking that this concept car comes from Audi or even Lamborghini. Maybe that's because it was styled under the watchful eye of Peter Schreyer, formally of Audi.

Regardless, the new show car (Kia won't tell us its name until the official reveal in Frankfurt) takes the form of a four-door 'coupé' in the same vein as the Audi A7 and Mercedes-Benz CLS. It's dramatic to say the least, mixing sharp creases with clearly defined curves and muscular surfacing. Carbon fibre wheels and detailing and prominent rear-view camera 'winglets' complete the look.

Stunning as the concept is to look at, as much interest is likely to be focused on what's underneath, as this Kia features rear-wheel drive. That hints at the executive market Kia is targeting. Though it has yet to be confirmed, the show car is likely to use the platform and V8 petrol engine of the Hyundai Genesis saloon.

It's known that Kia is interested in exploring new market segments, though we doubt it'll tackle the likes of the BMW 5 Series head on for some time.

"No matter from which perspective you look at it - this concept car is roaring with energy and ready for take-off," said Peter Schreyer, Kia Motors Chief Design Officer, cryptically.

More information will hopefully be released in Frankfurt, where the concept will sit alongside the new three-door version of the Kia Rio and a facelifted Kia Soul.
