Irish pricing for the Mercedes-AMG SL has been announced.

Irish pricing for the new Mercedes-AMG SL has been announced, with the luxurious 2+2 roadster starting from €238,395 for the SL 43 model.

Mercedes said that the price was a "figure influenced largely by the quality of manufacture and high level of specifications and which most buyers will likely regard as a long-term investment, particularly amongst those focused on maintaining their purchase in pristine condition."

Replaces ageing predecessor

The new 'R232' SL, first unveiled in 2021, replaces the elderly R231 model that had been on sale since 2012, sales of which had dwindled dramatically in recent years. The R232 will be sold exclusively as a Mercedes-AMG model.

The SL 43 opens the new range with a 381hp 2.0-litre turbocharged mild-hybrid-assisted four-cylinder petrol engine under the bonnet. A pair of 4.0-litre twin-turbo V8 models are also available producing 476hp or 585hp, both with sub-four-second 0-100km/h times. In all cases power is sent to the four wheels by a nine-speed automatic transmission. Another "Formula-One-inspired" hybrid model with an electric motor mounted on the rear axle is due to follow further down the line.

Sporty luxury

This is the first SL since the 1990s to be sold with rear seats, though Mercedes admits that those seats are really only suitable for passengers up to around five feet tall. In another departure, the model does away with the retractable metal hard-top seen on previous versions, in favour of a lighter fabric roof.

The interior, though characteristically plush, largely eschews buttons in favour of touchscreen-based operation. The instrument cluster is a 12.3-inch digital screen and the latest generation of the MBUX control system is accessed through an 11.9-inch central touchscreen with menu items such as "AMG Performance" and "AMG Track Pace" accentuating the SL's sporty side. Active engine mounts and a limited-slip differential are included to make the driving experience feel that bit more taut, though the 231-litre boot can still accommodate two golf bags.

Few rivals in Ireland

Although other markets are a little better-served, the Mercedes-AMG SL isn't likely to have too many competitors on the Irish market, with little more than the Porsche 911, BMW 8 Series, Lexus LC and perhaps the Audi R8 acting as anything approaching rivals.
