MG has confirmed a cheaper version of its electric ZS will arrive this year with 318km range.

MG has announced the arrival later this year of the ZS Standard Range, a new version of its electric ZS crossover featuring a smaller battery than the 72.6kWh unit found in the ZS Long Range.

Less range, more power

The ZS Standard Range is set to use a 51.1kWh battery pack, which will, the company says, deliver an electric range of 319km as well as 176hp - 20hp more than the Long Range model thanks to a different operating voltage.

Although that 319km range is quite a bit less than the 440km of the existing Long Range model, it'll still be plenty for most drivers' requirements. Using a 100kW rapid charger, the ZS's battery can be topped up from 10 per cent to 80 per cent in 36 minutes.

Updated ZS

A revised ZS went on sale last December featuring updated styling including a blanked-off grille with the charging port located under a flap just to the side of the front badge.

The graphics and functionality of the iSmart infotainment system were improved, with screens aplenty including a new digital instrument cluster and the sizeable 10.1-inch centrally mounted infotainment touchscreen.

Although the exact specs of the Standard Range models coming to Ireland haven't been announced yet, all Long Range models feature automatic air conditioning, LED headlights, adaptive cruise control, keyless entry, push-button start and a 360-degree parking camera.

There's a high level of driver assistance too with Active Emergency Braking and lane-keeping assistance with a lane departure warning system. Traffic Jam Assist can help in stop-start tailbacks; Intelligent Speed Limit Assist is able to recognise speed limit signs; and Intelligent High Beam Assist dips the car's headlights when oncoming traffic is detected. Additionally, higher-spec Long Range models get a Rear Cross Traffic Alert system and Blind Spot Detection with Lane Change Assist for extra safety on the motorway, though it remains to be seen if these will feature on Standard Range cars.

Pricing

Pricing for the MG ZS Standard Range has yet to be announced, but, as the Long Range starts from €31,995, expect something less for the model with the smaller battery.
