Bonkers Renault 4 dragster van

Specially built R4 van targets 280km/h at Bonneville Speed Week.

The Renault 4 is not noted for its speed, but that hasn't deterred the French firm from building a one-off van for the Bonneville Salt Flats.

Taking the R4 to the home of speed has meant a few changes, so the Renault 4 Bonneville comes with a 290hp turbocharged engine from a 1983 Renault 5 touring car racer. Also borrowed from the Renault parts stores are the five-speed gearbox and front brakes from a 25 GTX Turbo to keep the classic vibe going.

Bringing the R4 Bonneville bang up to date are a unique chassis and roll cage made from tubular steel. Attached to this are a single racing seat made from aluminium, fire extinguisher and parachute to help slow the car down as it doesn't have any rear brakes.

Built by Renault's classic and motorsport divisions, the R4 Bonneville will be entered in Speed Week by a team called the Triplets de Bonneville. They are hoping to see a 280km/h top speed run at Speed Week, which takes place in August.
