UrbanRebel concept hints at future Cupra models.

SEAT's sporty, youthful sub-brand, Cupra, has revealed an eye-catching electric concept intended to hint at the company's future design language.

Virtual inspiration

The concept takes the form of a racing car with its low-to-the-ground stance and front and side splitters giving it a purposeful look, as does the gap in the front, intended, presumably, to channel air to cool the electric powertrain at speed.

The wraparound roof and window design give the effect of a helmet and a floating roof.

The part that stands out the most though is that large rear spoiler. According to Cupra, the spoiler is "a nod to racing cars seen in the virtual world", and admittedly, the UrbanRebel does look like something out of a video game or Tron.

As per Cupra's figures, the UrbanRebel Concept delivers 250kW (340hp) of continuous power and up to 320kW (435hp) at its peak. 0-100km/h is dispatched in just 3.2 seconds.

Peel away the surface

Beneath the cool race-car looks the UrbanRebel is based on the Volkswagen Group's MEB platform which it shares with the Volkswagen ID range and the Cupra Born.

Rather than just an exercise in pure fantasy, it is intended to give an idea of what future Cupras will look like, particularly its urban electric car, set to launch in 2025 of which Design Director, Jorge Diaz, says, the UrbanRebel is a "radical interpretation."

That urban electric car will be an important one for Cupra.

According to Wayne Griffiths, Cupra's CEO: "The urban electric car is a key strategic project not only for our company, but also for the Volkswagen Group, as our aim is to produce more than 500,000 urban electric cars per year in Martorell for different Group brands. The urban electric car will democratise and make accessible electromobility to the masses."
