Hyundai Kona N first glimpse

Shadowy photos preview the hot Hyundai Kona N.

Both Hyundai and Kia seem to be quite keen, lately, on the old preview-the-preview-of-a-new-model with shadowed pictures and not much detail. That's OK by us - we're always interested anyway, even if these releases are a touch light on anything you'd call an actual fact, but when a car is as potentially exciting as the new Hyundai Kona N, we'll take what we can get.

Triangular brake light

What we can get are these darkened images, which show that the hot version of the Kona will get lots and lots of red accents all over, and a high-level triangular brake light that we've already seen on the (impressive, future classic) i30 N hot hatch.

Up front, to go with the ultra-slim lights of the facelifted standard Kona, there's an egg-crate grille with an N badge, and extra nostrils cut into the leading edge of the bonnet (they also appear on the not-actually-fast N-Line versions of the Kona). Hyundai says that the lower bumper and grille have been inspired by: "an aeronautic fuselage." Doesn't look like any plane we've ever seen, but OK...

Red accents

Around the back, and on top of that triangular brake light, there's a big rear wing, which Hyundai claims produces your actual downforce, dual exhaust, and a whacking great diffuser. There's also the completion of the big, red, accent line that starts under the nose, runs down the side sills, and finishes under the rear bumper.

Up to 280hp

Hyundai hasn't quite confirmed the car's mechanical spec yet, but we do know that it will come with the same 2.0-litre turbo engine as the i30 N, so as much as 280hp is on the cards, and it's likely to get a new eight-speed DCT automatic gearbox as standard. And of course, it will have a chassis tuned by the same geniuses who created the i30 N, led by ex-BMW M chief Albert Biermann.

Hyundai says "more information will be revealed soon." Keep it coming...
