The five-door Cross Turismo is a more versatile Porsche Taycan.

Porsche has taken the wraps off the production-ready Taycan Cross Turismo. It's a five-door version of the Taycan electric car with more rugged styling, more space inside and the ability to go (slightly) further off the beaten track than its sports saloon sibling. The Cross Turismo is ready to order now, with first deliveries later this year.

Mission E concept styling

It's three years since Porsche displayed the Mission E Cross Turismo concept car the 2018 Geneva Motor Show, and it made no secret of the fact that it was showroom-bound. The new Taycan Cross Turismo takes its lead from that design study, but to our eyes looks even better. Aside from the extended roofline, the Cross Turismo gets its own bumpers, side sills and wheelarch trim, to give it a more SUV-like appearance.

This can be augmented by the addition of the Off-Road Design package, which we believe is fitted to both the green and white cars in our image gallery. This package adds 'vanes' to the ends of the sills and the corners of the bumpers. Included in it is a Gravel Mode (tweaking the chassis, traction and throttle) and a further 10mm increase in ground clearance. The Cross Turismo rides on air suspension as standard, with Porsche Active Suspension Management (PASM) electronic damper control, and 20mm more ground clearance than the Taycan saloon. Naturally, it also gets all-wheel drive.

Four models, one battery

From launch, Porsche will offer the Taycan Cross Turismo in four guises, all using the 'Performance Battery Plus' with its 93.4kWh gross capacity. The Taycan 4 Cross Turismo gets a nominal 380hp, 'overboosted' to 476hp with launch control for a 0-100km/h time of 5.1 seconds. Its WLTP range is as high as 455km. Next up is the Taycan 4S Cross Turismo, making 490- or 571hp, dispatching 0-100km/h in 4.1 seconds and achieving up to 452km on a full charge.

Above those are the 'Turbo' models. The Taycan Turbo Cross Turismo's motors produce 625hp normally, or 680hp during launch control for 0-100km/h in 3.3 seconds. It travels up to 452km on a fully charged battery. The Turbo S equivalent's numbers are 625-761hp, 2.9 seconds and 418km.

It's not an estate, right?

Thanks to the new rear end, the Taycan Cross Turismo gives its rear-seat passengers a useful 47mm more headroom, while the boot lid of the Taycan saloon is replaced by a wide-opening tailgate. The volume of the boot varies by model, but in all cases the Cross Turismo's holds a little more than the equivalent saloon with the rear seats in use, and holds over 1,200 litres when the back seats are folded down. The Taycan 4 Cross Turismo, for example, can take 446 litres at a minimum, and up to 1,221 litres. That's aside from the 80 litres or so that can be stored in the 'frunk' storage under the bonnet up front in all versions.

Porsche has also revealed a new design of bike carrier for the Taycan Cross Turismo, which can carry up to three bikes. It allows the tailgate to be opened even when there are bikes on it. Oh, and Moreover, Porsche has launched a couple of new eBikes if you really want to look the lifestyle part.
