New mild-hybrids and plug-in hybrids added to Volvo XC60 line-up.

Volvo has announced a new line-up of electrified options for the XC60, although it stopped short of adding a fully electric model just yet.

Mild-hybrid petrol and diesel options

Joining the XC60 range for the first time are the mild-hybrid B4 and B5 four-cylinder turbo diesel engines, which get a 48-volt mild-hybrid system. You can have a 197hp B4 or a 235hp B5 with either front- or four-wheel drive, and a 235hp B5 diesel with four-wheel drive only. The mild-hybrid system basically ramps up the use of the stop-start function at urban speeds, helping to trim fuel consumption and also allowing for faster re-starting of the engine as you pull away. There are also 250hp B5 petrol and 300hp B6 petrol versions.

340hp T6 plug-in hybrid

The XC60 is already available with two plug-in hybrid powertrains, the 390hp T8 and the 405hp T8 by Polestar version. Joining those two is a new 340hp T6 plug-in hybrid, which can travel for a claimed 51km on a full charge of its 11.6kWh battery. The T6's CO2 emissions start from 55g/km, and Volvo claims combined fuel economy of 113mpg, or 2.5-litres per 100km.

The new XC60 T6 plug-in will be available in the usual Inscription and R-Design trims, as well as a more affordable Inscription Expression model, which Volvo says makes a plug-in XC60 more accessible than ever (although Irish prices and specifications are not yet confirmed.

Broader appeal

Steve Beattie, form Volvo, said: "The XC60 has always had the perfect blend of luxury, technology and safety, and now, thanks to the latest advanced hybrid powertrains, it has broader appeal for both private buyers and company car drivers. A larger range of economical and powerful engines means there is an XC60 for every premium mid-size SUV buyer."
