Maserati Ghibli and Quattroporte saloons get extra power and sharper handling.

We've already had one Maserati Trofeo road car recently - in the shape of the big Levante SUV - and now the slinky Italian saloons, Ghibli and Quattroporte, are getting the same treatment.

580hp turbo V8

The three cars are being presented for the first time in the colours of the Italian flag - green for Quattroporte, white for Levante and red for Ghibli, which combines with the burnished chrome-work and glossy red trims for a frankly rather sexy look.

Of course, the bigger news than the colour is that the highest-power version of Maserati's turbo V8 engine has been shoehorned into both four-door cars for the first time. Both Trofeo models will come with the 580hp version of the twin-turbo 3.8-litre V8 engine. Peak torque, for both the Ghibli and Quattroporte, as for the Levante, is 730Nm.

326km/h top speed

That engine, built for Maserati by Ferrari, under licence, is powerful enough to make these the fastest four-door Maseratis ever built. Both will hit a top speed of - wait for it - 326k/h. That means leaving the Levante Trofeo in the dust at a 'mere' 320km/h.

Both cars also get the Integrated Vehicle Control (IVC) system, a driving mode selector that Maserati says "guarantees enhanced driving dynamics, greater active safety and even more thrilling performance." There's a 'Corsa' button that basically gives you maximum-attack mode, while there's also a Launch Control function for scaring AMGs at the traffic lights.

On the outside, you'll spot a Trofeo by the grille, with twin vertical bars in Black Piano finish, and the introduction of carbon fibre on the front air duct trims and rear diffuser. There are also little red details on the bottoms of the air vents on the sides, and on the Maserati trident badge on the rear pillar.

There are also new light clusters at the back, which have LED signatures that mimic the classic 'boomerang' lights of the 3200 GT coupe and the Alfieri concept car. The Ghibli also, like the Levante, gets aggressive bonnet vents (the Quattroporte doesn't as they would be too uncouth...). Ghibli and Quattroporte Trofeo are fitted with 21-inch aluminium Orione wheels. 22-inch Orione wheels are available on Levante Trofeo.

New infotainment system

Inside, there's a new 10.1-inch touchscreen infotainment system that lights up on entry with a Trofeo-specific screen, while the seat headrests get Trofeo logo stitching. Oh, and those seats are clad in full-grain Pieno Fiore natural leather. The cars' suite of electronic driver aids has also been upgraded to include a new Active Driving Assist for helping you with lane-keeping on main roads.
