New styling and new engines for the Ssangyong Tivoli crossover.

SsangYong has launched an updated version of its Tivoli SUV, with updated styling, new engines, and a re-worked interior.

New 1.2 turbo engine

The Tivoli was, if we're honest, our first inkling that SsangYong could actually produce a decent car, and so hopes are high that this updated version might prove an affordable thorn in the side of more established rivals.

The most important changes are under the bonnet, where we find two new turbocharged petrol engines, a 1.2-litre three-cylinder and a 1.5-litre four-cylinder. That 1.2 engine, on paper at any rate, looks interesting, as it combines good power (128hp) with reasonable emissions (130g/km, depending on spec). The 1.5 has a more robust 163hp, while the previous 1.6-litre diesel engine is carried over, and now has 136hp and 324Nm of torque.

More safety equipment as standard

SsangYong has also uprated the Tivoli's safety kit. All trim levels have a minimum of six airbags and electronic safety features including Front Collision Warning (FCW), Lane Departure Warning (LDW), Automatic Emergency Breaking (AEB), Lane Keeping Assist (LKA), Traffic Sign Recognition (TSR), Front Vehicle Start Alert (FVSA), Driver Attention Alert (DAA), Emergency Stop System (ESS), Safety Distance Alert (SDA).

There's also a rather snazzy new 10.25-inch digital instrument panel, which allows you to adjust serious items (the sensitivity of that automated braking system) and not-so-serious items (the 'welcome chime' that plays when you sit in). There's also a new eight-inch central touchscreen, which comes with DAB, Apple CarPlay, and Android Auto.

Still waiting for Irish prices and specs

Irish prices and specs are yet to be announced, but in the UK the Tivoli range kicks off with the EX model, which comes with cruise control, electric windows, remote central locking, 'smart' steering, DAB Radio with iPod and Bluetooth connectivity, 16-inch steel wheels with covers, manual air conditioning and all of the safety kit mentioned above. Upgrade to a 'Ventura' model and you get 16-inch alloys, black faux-leather seats with front seat heaters, a seven-inch touchscreen with rear camera, Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, heated leather steering wheel, leather gear knob, a seventh airbag, floor mats, mini spare, luggage cover, LED front fogs, roof rails, keyless start, auto lights, wipers, front and rear parking sensors.

Only the top-spec 'Ultimate' model gets the digital instruments, along with 18-inch diamond-cut alloys, leather seats, and dual-zone air conditioning.

The Tivoli has been a big success for SsangYong since it was launched in 2015, with more than 50,000 sold in Europe. Can the updated version continue that run? We shall see.
