Can I import an ex-military vehicle from the UK without a V5C?
The question
Is it possible to import an ex-MOD vehicle into Ireland as it doesn’t have the V5C? The car comes with an MOD release document.

Hi Lukas,
It may be possible, but we would strongly advise checking with Revenue before buying or importing the vehicle. Ex-Ministry of Defence vehicles may never have been registered for civilian road use in the UK, which would explain the absence of a V5C registration certificate.
Revenue normally requires the original foreign registration document when registering a used imported vehicle in Ireland. An MOD release document establishes the vehicle's release from military service, but we can’t assume it will be accepted as a substitute for a V5C.
I'd recommend contacting Revenue's VRT section with copies of the MOD release documentation, the vehicle's identification number and details of its make, model and age.
Ask for written confirmation of whether it can be registered here and what additional documentation might be required. You really should establish this before committing to the purchase, as registration isn't guaranteed.
