Hi,

have a 2022 BMW 530e LCI and my iDrive head unit was stolen out of the car; can I replace it with one from a diesel model?

Expert answer

It may be possible to use an iDrive head unit from a diesel BMW 5 Series in your 2022 BMW 530e, but it isn't necessarily a straightforward swap.

The important factors are the head unit's hardware version and compatibility with your car's equipment.

Even if the replacement unit physically fits (which is likely), it will need specialist coding to work with your car. This is particularly important for the 530e, as the iDrive system also manages plug-in-hybrid functions, including charging settings and energy displays.

I'd recommend contacting a BMW electronics specialist before buying a second-hand unit. Give them your car's VIN and the donor unit's part number if possible so they can confirm compatibility and whether it can be successfully programmed to your car.
