Can I convert a commercial Discovery into a passenger car?

The question

I bought a Land Rover Discovery commercial two years ago; is it possible to make it into a private SUV now, putting the seats back, and pay the necessary taxes etc?

Hi James,

It should be possible to convert your Discovery back into a private passenger SUV, provided the vehicle can be returned to the appropriate safety and technical standards.

It isn't simply a matter of reinstalling the rear seats and paying a bit of VRT, however. The seatbelts, mounting points and other relevant equipment must meet the necessary standards, and the conversion may require certification by a suitably qualified engineer.

You must also declare the conversion to Revenue using its VRT conversion procedure. Revenue will assess the vehicle and determine whether additional Vehicle Registration Tax (VRT) is payable. This is likely to be a substantial amount, depending on the Discovery's age value, emissions, etc.

It’s worth having a read through Revenue’s page on conversions before you commit to this. I suspect it would be easier and cheaper to just find an existing passenger model.
