The question

Is there legislation covering electric-bike tax and insurance in Ireland?

Expert answer

There is specific legislation covering electric bicycles – or ‘e-bikes’ - in Ireland, with the relevant provisions of the Road Traffic and Roads Act 2023 coming into effect in May 2024, but not covering tax or insurance.

Under Irish law, an electric bicycle is treated like a conventional bicycle provided its motor has a maximum continuous rated power of 250 watts, only provides assistance while the rider is pedalling and progressively reduces assistance before cutting out at 25km/h. The bicycle can travel faster than that, but only without motor assistance.

Electric bicycles meeting these requirements do not need to be registered, taxed or insured in Ireland, and riders do not need a driving licence. Helmets are not compulsory, and there is no minimum riding age.

Obviously, none of this covers e-scooters which are a very different thing.
