Can I import a four-month-old car from the North VAT free?

The question

Hi,

I'm confused by the wording about importing an EV from NI. The car I am interested in is four months old but has only 3,750 miles (6,035km) on the clock. I'm buying from a franchise dealer. Can I import this VAT free?

Thanks

Expert answer

Hi Jim,

Despite having covered more than 6,000km, the car is only four months old, so Revenue still regards it as a new means of transport for VAT purposes. The test is “six months old or less OR 6,000km or less”, so it has to be both more than six months old and have covered over 6,000km before that particular Irish VAT charge no longer applies.
