My brakes are squeaking; what is it?

The question
There is a squeaking noise every time I apply the brakes. The pads don't need to be replaced; what could be causing this noise?

Hi Liam,
There are a number of potential causes. The discs themselves may be worn or have a groove in them. The dust cover may be rubbing, as might a retaining clip. Copper grease applied to the back of the pads can help with this. The safest thing to do is bring it to a mechanic to look at though.
