My first car needs to suit lots of motorway mileage...

The question

Hi,

I am looking to buy my first car and not sure where to start. I would need something suitable for motorway driving as I will be driving from Dublin to Galway several times a week. Could you give me some advice on what cars to look for?

Would also like something cheaper to insure.

Hi Orla,

Without knowing your budget, we're going to have to give general advice rather than pinpointing a model that will suit your needs.

On one hand, you should pick something with a small-capacity engine to keep your insurance costs in check, but on the other, that regular Dublin-to-Galway drive requires something economical on the motorway and comfortable, too, which is difficult to get in a small car with a small engine.

Depending on how much you have to spend, I'd suggest a diesel-engined supermini or C-segment car (i.e. like the SEAT Leon) might work well.

Come back to us with more information if you'd like us to help narrow down your search.
