Can I pay the old VRT rate on import?

The question
If I have imported a car from the UK on 29th Dec and booked online at the NCT centre but the inspection date is not until 12th Jan 2021, am I entitled to pay the old VRT rate? It's not my fault the centre is unable to look at my car until after the 31st Dec deadline.

Hi Darren,
We were lead to believe that there was no leeway on this, but since you posted this question, you've told us that you've been in touch with Revenue and, actually, a refund of the difference should be possible for people in your situation. We'd urge anyone else in this situation to get clarification beforehand of course.
