Why is my Ford Focus using so much oil?

My Ford Focus is using oil at an alarming rate with no visible leaks and also no smoke from the exhaust. What could be the problem?

Hi Michael,
Sounds like piston rings or valve seals or maybe even both!
Needs a major amount of work whichever it is.
