Skoda Kodiaq: import or buy new?

Hello,

We're thinking of buying a Skoda Kodiaq seven-seat petrol. We have a €10k deposit. We have two options: get a 2017 version from UK for €30k all in or buy a new one on PCP for €37k. Repayments will be the same on a six-year HP vs a three-year PCP, but leaning towards the used option from the UK. Anything we should consider? Is it better to buy new as easier to exchange?

Is the SA Opel Monza ok to import to Ireland?

A friend of mine in Dublin is planning to import a 1990 Opel Monza GSi saloon from Cape Town in South Africa she's seen online, but is it legal to import to Republic of Ireland and, since it's identical to the old Opel Kadett sold in Ireland in the 1980s, no parts issues?

Looking at importing a Porsche 911...

Hi!

I’m looking in to getting a Porsche 911. I’m interested in the 997.2 released in 2009. They’re going for about £30,000 at the moment, but I’m worried VRT will make them really pricey. In Ireland at the moment there’s a massive €20,000 difference in price between a 2008 and 2009 model because of fewer issues after the facelift that year and cheaper road tax. And I have a feeling this will massively impact VRT figures. What rule of thumb would you apply here and what steps could be taken to minimise getting a shock bringing the car in?

Can I avoid VAT on a nearly-new import?

I bought a car in the UK and took it for inspection. It has just 2,995km the on purchase invoice and so I was caught for VAT. The dealer will buy it back, put the miles on it and then sell it to my wife. I assume I cannot bring it in a second time as this would probably be tax evasion? Since my wife is a separate person am I correct in thinking that Revenue will accept this?

Are my maths on a BMW import right?

Hi,

I am looking at importing a BMW 4 Series from the UK, March 2018 with 100 miles on the clock. I am trying to work out the tax implications. Can you let me know if my assumptions below are correct?

Purchase price in UK £23,000 = €26,200

VAT Qualifying @20% = €4,367

VRT = €7,069 (from VRT calculator)

Revenue OMSP = €37,206

Irish VAT = €37,206 X 23% = €8,557

Total import cost = €26,200+€7,069+€8,557 = €41,826

VAT refund from UK = €4,367

Total car cost = €37,459

Thanks

Tim

Considering a Japanese import Passat...

Hi, I'm considering changing my 2011 VW Passat 1.4 saloon to a 2012 VW Passat 1.4 Estate, as I need the space. The one I'm considering is a very well equipped Highline model, but it's a Japanese import. Is there anything in particular I should know about buying a used Japanese car?

Thanks, Brendan

What do you think of VRT rates and imports?

I understand that the import duty tax has risen from 10 per cent to 11 per cent as of 1/1/19. Do you think it should or could increase again after Brexit in order to help save the motor trade in the Republic and to try persuade people to stay and buy Irish? I feel that if the import duty tax went to 12.5 per cent it would stop people going to England or up North. What is your opinion on the matter?

How much to import my Porsche from US?

Hello

I'm hoping to import my 2015 Porsche Macan S petrol from New York when I move home to Ireland later this year. I can't find Porsche on the VRT calculator - I have owned the car for nine months and saw there are some exemptions if you have owned the car for over six months. I'm pretty confused and hoping to bring the car with me, but if VRT costs are too high, I'll have to sell before the move - any info is greatly appreciated

Thank you, John

Best way to deal with a car I own in Spain?

This is probably a difficult question and if you don't have a clear answer, that's fine.

Upon retiring, I bought an apartment in Spain four years ago and for the past four years I've come and gone. Because I spent extended periods there it wasn't realistic to hire a car, so I bought a new car but then I made the mistake of replacing it in 2017. I was never tax resident in Spain and now intend selling up and coming back to Ireland permanently. Do you know what is the tax position of bringing the car back the Ireland? It might be better to sell it in Spain, but I'm unlikely to get a reasonable price, but equally if the VRT is very significant I should accept the loss.

Thanks

Philip
