New MG hatchback previewed

The MG Concept 5 shows how a new hot hatch could look.

After pillaging MG Rover the Chinese are busy showing us how it should be done at the Shanghai auto show. Pop over to the MG stand, ignore the Morris Garages sign up in lights and instead feast your eyes on the new MG Concept 5.

As the name, and looks, highlight, this is a show car, but proportionally it would rival cars in the Ford Focus and VW Golf class. It's a good looker too, with an edgy style that mixes hints of Alfa and Audi in a rather convincing whole.

No word on whether it'll reach the Irish market, but as the MG Concept 5's design was overseen by Tony Williams-Kenny at MG's Longbridge design studio in England it's difficult not to imagine it coming here.

If it can offer some of the driving flair and decent pricing of the recently launched MG6 then those established contenders have good reason to be worried - especially if MG can put a decent interior in it.
