End of the road for 'cash for cars' signs?

County Council urges motorists not to respond to illegal adverts.

Dublin City Council is urging car owners who are thinking of selling or disposing of their vehicles through the "cash for cars" adverts to reconsider.

The council is liaising with Gardaí to see if the numbers attached to the signs that hang on nearly every lamp post in the country can be disconnected. The signs are a distraction to motorists according to Litter Prevention Officer Bernie Lillis and as a result pose a safety risk to road users. In the past 18 months the Waste Management Department has removed over 5,000 such signs with the penalty for illegally putting them up running to €4,000 if convicted in court.

"Motorists also need to be aware that they have a responsibility to ensure that change of ownership is done correctly in order that any charges, fines or penalty points are attributed to the rightful owner," a spokesperson for the council added.
