Latest new car sales figures remain positive

Small but steady growth in the new car market ahead of the 142 period.

The month of May saw yet another small but steady growth in the motor industry with new car registrations increasing six per cent on May 2013. In the latest figures released by SIMI (Society of the Irish Motor Industry), 64,013 new cars were registered up until the end of May this year - 12,482 more than in the same period last year.

Commenting on the latest figures, SIMI's Director General, Alan Nolan, said: "We expected May to slow a little, in advance of the new '142 plate' in July. While the increase isn't as large as previous months, demand has remained strong, attributable to a more affordable marketplace for motorists and better availability of retail finance options."

According to SIMI figures the top-three selling car brands so far this year have been Volkswagen, Toyota and Ford, with the top-three selling models consisting of the Volkswagen Golf, Nissan Qashqai and Ford Focus.

Anything else?
Although the increase might not be headline news, it is a positive sign that the market is continuing to recover and it is likely that the forthcoming 142 registration period will see a further jump in sales.
