Are your tyres safe?

Bridgestone reminds motorists to check their tyres this summer.

Bridgestone is urging motorists to check the condition of their tyres before setting off on long journeys this summer. Tread depth and inflation levels are two basic checks that can be done that will potentially save both lives and money.

After research conducted on 46,000 cars in Ireland, Bridgestone found that 63 per cent of them were running on under-inflated tyres. Driving with under-inflated tyres makes the car use more fuel as the tyres create drag on the ground. It also affects handling, responsiveness and tyre longevity.

"Few people understand that tyres lose pressure naturally over time and need to be inflated regularly," says Jackie Wherity of Bridgestone Ireland. "Recommended tyre pressure levels can be found inside the fuel filler cap, in the driver's door and in the vehicle owner's manual."

Checking tread depths is also as important as ensuring the correct tyre pressure. The legal limit is 1.6mm of tread and any signs of damage or uneven wear should be reported to a garage immediately. Either of these problems could lead to unexpected handling and potential blowouts.

As the weather gets warmer, more and more caravans will be seen adorning Ireland's roads. Before setting off, motorists should check these tyres as well; as they are likely to have been left standing over the winter period and may have become damaged. It is recommended that caravan tyres are replaced at least every five years to avoid the risk of blowouts when travelling at speed.

"Even a five minute look at the tyres before a long journey can be priceless," comments Wherity. "While our advice appears to be common sense, it is surprising how many motorists don't follow these tips."
