New car sales slump

Figures for new car sales drop by almost 20 per cent in January.

The Society of the Irish Motor Industry (SIMI) has released figures that show a dramatic decline in the sale of new cars in January.

Figures show that sales were down 18.8 per cent in January compared to estimates; and that it isn't just private car sales that have fallen. During January, sales of LCVs dropped 9.3 per cent; while HGV sales decreased by 7.3 per cent. Despite this, used car sales are said to be on the rise, resulting in part-exchange and trade-in vehicles holding more of their value.

"Given that there appears to be positive signs on consumer confidence, our sector has yet to see any positive impact," comments Alan Nolan, SIMI's Director General. "It is early days yet, and we will be following next month's progress very closely."

There are some reports that put 2013's slow start down to the refreshed '131' number plate that was announced in December. Dealers are also experiencing confusion from buyers who believe that the new style is for one year only. SIMI reassures consumers that the new system is here to stay and that the '141' plate is scheduled to be released next January.
