News articles in today's papers state that owners of 163,000 cars are being tracked down so that repairs may be carried out on their vehicles. Transport Minister Noel Dempsey has been quoted as saying that the details of 163,495 cars have been requested by the car manufacturers over the course of the past year. They relate to 86 recalls.
However, the aforementioned articles refer to the recalls as "recall scares", when in fact most car recalls are for minor items that have no bearing on safety.
While Toyota's major global recall this year attracted much media attention, the fact is that millions of cars every year are recalled around the world.
