CompleteCar.ie urges calm over recall figures

Reports in the media of 160,000 cars with defects may cause unnecessary alarm.

News articles in today's papers state that owners of 163,000 cars are being tracked down so that repairs may be carried out on their vehicles. However, the angle taken is one that may cause unnecessary panic amongst drivers. CompleteCar.ie urges motorists to remain calm and obtain the correct information from the car manufacturers.

Transport Minister Noel Dempsey has been quoted as saying that the details of 163,495 cars have been requested by the car manufacturers over the course of the past year. They relate to 86 recalls.

However, the aforementioned articles refer to the recalls as "recall scares", when in fact most car recalls are for minor items that have no bearing on safety.

While Toyota's major global recall this year attracted much media attention, the fact is that millions of cars every year are recalled around the world.

If you have any concerns, a simple check with your local dealer should confirm whether or not your car is the subject of a recall.
