7,368 new cars sold so far under the scrappage scheme

Renault tops the scrappage sales charts and March was the busiest month for the scheme yet.

Figures released by the Society of the Irish Motor Industry (SIMI) show that 7,368 new cars were sold under the government scrappage scheme in the first five months of 2010.

Renault topped the charts with 18 percent of all scrappage sales, ahead of Ford on 15 percent, Skoda and Volkswagen on 10 percent and Toyota on eight percent.

A total of 54 percent of cars sold under the scrappage scheme are from motor tax Band B, with 46 percent coming from Band A.

March was the busiest month for the scrappage scheme with 30 percent of all scrappage claims occurring in this month - although a delay in processing these could partially account for this.

Unsurprisingly, Dublin was the county with the most cars sold under the scheme, with 23.86 percent, just ahead of Cork on 15.99 percent.
