Lexus to show new luxury LM people carrier

Second generation LM to come to Europe, but not Ireland (probably).

Think car companies don't make people carriers, or MPVs if you prefer, anymore? Think again. Not only does Lexus make the luxurious LM MPV, but it has also confirmed that a second generation will be coming soon.

Debut in Shanghai

The new LM will be shown off at the Shanghai motor show on the 18th of April, and like the current generation, will be based on the big Toyota Alphard. What do we know beyond that? Not much - Lexus has only shown us the single, heavily cropped photo of the rear of the car, but that does at least suggest that this is more than a mere restyling job - the whole rear structure of the car appears to be different.

The current LM, described by Lexus as 'sophisticated executive transport' and 'an unrivalled chauffeured experience' has a massive Lexus 'spindle' grille up the front (making it look like a vast mechanical vampire) and a choice of six, seven, or a luxurious four-seat layout in the back.

Hybrid power

The new LM will likely be offered as a hybrid only, using tried and trusted Toyota and Lexus' hybrid engines developing 250hp (for the LM 300h) and 371hp (for the LM 500h). It's possible that an all-electric version is being developed, but nothing is confirmed yet.

The LM (along with the Alphard) is primarily aimed at the Southeast Asian market, especially China, where large MPVs are still in demand, often as executive airport shuttles. This time around, Lexus will spread the LM's wings a little, putting the all-new version on sale in Australia and Europe.

Irish sales?

Will it come to Ireland? While it might be tempting to imagine rocking around in hybrid refinement with your extended family perched on luxurious Lexus leather, it's sadly unlikely. Lexus Ireland has said it will decide on importing the LM next month but that the outlook is not good for the model. Maybe get a petition started at your local Lexus dealer? With a cardboard sign that says 'I want my vampire van'?
