Honda’s Sports EV concept steals the Tokyo show

Retro-look coupe could be headed for 2020 production date

What's the news?

That's it people, we have our winner. Honda has created the undoubted star of the 2017 Tokyo Motor show, and it's the Sports EV Concept. Taking its cue (and presumably some of its powertrain, although Honda is being tight lipped on that for now) from the gorgeously cute Urban EV concept shown recently at the Frankfurt motor show, the Sports EV is a slice of pure retro seventies styling, served up with a modern electric twist.

Honda is being very, very brief with any details for the moment, pausing only to say that the car has "EV performance and AI (artificial intelligence) inside a compact body with the aim to realise the joy of driving the user can feel with a sense of unity with the car." it clearly shares a family resemblance with the Urban EV concept (virtually the same lights and grille) so hopefully that commonality means that there's more chance than not of it going into production. Honda has spoken of a possible 2020 on-sale date, although nothing is confirmed for now.

It's about the size of a Mazda MX-5, has an immensely long bonnet, and that's literally all we can tell you for now.

Across the Honda stand, the company is making clear its (slightly late to the party) commitment to electric cars, with another outing for the Urban EV, a NeuV concept which has been shown before, and a series of oddball, wheelchair like apparatus, including one called the Robocast which looks rather like an artificially intelligent hot-dog stand.

Oh, and there's the little matter of the Super Cub 110, a special edition of Honda's legendary moped, which is being made to celebrate the 100-millionth production version. Let's just say that again - 100-million Honda Super Cubs have been sold. Take that, Toyota Corolla...
