BMW confirms 8 Series’ return

BMW 8 Series to be revived for 2018, concept version to be shown at this month’s Villa d’Este.

What's the news?

BMW fans, rejoice: the 8 Series is coming back. But this time around, it won't be an interim replacement for the 6 Series; instead, the Bavarian company is finally going to build a top-end sports coupe that should be able to take the fight to the Porsche 911, Audi R8, Bentley Continental et al.

This outline image previews the look of the Eight, which will be revealed in concept car form at the Concorso d'Eleganza Villa d'Este at the end of the month. BMW announced the 8 Series at its AGM today (May 11th) and the concept car 'embodies uncompromising dynamics and contemporary luxury - the essence of a modern BMW coupe'.

The production 8 Series is slated to hit the world markets in 2018.

Anything else?

BMW's chairman, Harald Krüger, said: "The BMW 8 Series Coupe will build on our tradition of luxurious sports coupes and add a genuine dream car to our line-up - a slice of pure automotive fascination. The 8 Series Coupe will underpin our claim to leadership in the luxury segment. I can tell you today that this will be a true luxury sports coupe."
