Ohme and Volkswagen join charging forces

Cork-based Ohme will now provide home charging solutions for Volkswagen owners.

Volkswagen Group Ireland has appointed Cork-based Ohme as its provider for home charging solutions. Ohme will be the preferred provider for anyone buying a new electric or electrified Volkswagen, SEAT, Audi, Skoda, or Cupra.

Fast growing smart charging company

"Our partnership with the Volkswagen Group Ireland underlines Ohme's position as one of Ireland's fastest growing smart charging companies," said David Watson, CEO at Ohme. "Volkswagen Group Ireland has one of the most comprehensive electrified vehicle portfolios available to Irish car buyers. We are looking forward to introducing those drivers to the benefits of off-peak charging with reduced running costs and working with retailers to help their customers through the entire process."

So what, you might think. It's just a new supplier of home charging points for Volkswagen owners. Well, there's a little more to it than that. Ohme is a pioneer of 'smart' chargers which are designed to help you get the most affordable home charging for your new EV, which means that the combo of Ohme and VW can - potentially - save you money on your driving bills.

Save money and CO2

How much? Quite a lot - for instance, charging a 58kWh Volkswagen ID.3 from zero to 100 per cent with an Ohme Home Pro on an off-peak tariff, such as SSE Airtricity's Night Boost, could cost just over €6 for an electric range of more than 420kms (according to the ID.3's official WLTP). Over a year and 10,000kms of driving, that would equate to a saving of almost €700 compared to charging on the standard tariff, assuming, of course, that you can actually squeeze that magic 420km out of each charge.

Think that's good? There's more. Because Ohme chargers are smart, they can also be set to charge your car at times when there's maximum possible renewable energy being fed into the grid (such as on breezy nights or sunny afternoons). That helps you maximise your truly emissions-free driving as much as possible.

Award-winning

"We are delighted to announce that we will be partnering with Ohme as our preferred home charger supplier," says Carla Wentzel, Managing Director for Volkswagen Group Ireland. "Ohme's award-winning Home Pro charger and reputation for excellent customer service represents a clear differentiator in the market and a perfect match to the extensive range of electrified models across the Volkswagen Group umbrella."

Volkswagen says that it's the leading supplier of electric cars in the Irish market - even though Hyundai currently holds the best-selling EV brand and model (the Ioniq 5) VW Group as a whole, including Audi, SEAT, Cupra, and Skoda, currently holds 34 per cent of the electric car market in Ireland and the Volkswagen ID.4 was the best-selling electric car in February.
