Civic Type R leads Geneva for Honda

Honda’s high-performance hatch joined on Geneva stand by Clarity FCV and NeuV concept.

What's the news?

Honda has announced the three main stars of its Geneva Motor Show stand this year - and there should be something to please everyone in the line-up.

While there are two very noble eco-machines within the trio, it's the first reveal of the Civic Type R in production spec which has us salivating. Not much in the way of firm details from Honda, beyond the fact it will be fitted with the latest 2.0-litre VTEC Turbo petrol engine - likely to be developing more than the 310hp and 400Nm of the outgoing model - and that it was developed alongside the Civic MkX hatchback, so it benefits from the same thorough re-engineering of its chassis. It will also be the first Honda-badged Type R to be sold in America.

The second car in the line-up is the Clarity Fuel Cell (FCV), which will be displayed following the arrival of the first European cars delivered at the end of last year. Honda says this is the world's most advanced fuel cell vehicle, with a range of approximately 620km, and it is part of the Europe-wide HyFIVE (Hydrogen For Innovative Vehicles) initiative to expand the hydrogen refuelling infrastructure across the region.

Anything else?

Finally, the third star of Honda's show is the NeuV, a fully electric concept car with a 'state-of-the-art emotion engine' that can learn about its driver and then make new choices or recommendations in the future, according to preferences displayed by the human. The NeuV isn't your typical car that you buy and use yourself; rather, Honda reckons it should function as an automated ride sharing vehicle when you're not using it yourself. Indeed, the company goes so far as to say it could not only work as a robot taxi in your absence, but it could sell energy back to the grid during times of high demand when it is sitting idle, which monetises the vehicle's downtime.
