Volkswagen debuts electric Crafter concept

First deliveries to begin in 2017, no reduction in load space.

What's the news?

The IAA Commercial Vehicles show in Hannover was the venue for Volkswagen's unveiling of its e-Crafter concept. This is the first fully electric Crafter, and careful planning during the design phase has ensured that there is no loss in cargo-carrying space relative to the regular model. In fact, the company has stated that the vehicle is almost production ready, with first deliveries due to begin next year.

So what changes have been made? The most obvious is the electric drivetrain of course, which has an output of 100kW and gives the e-Crafter a range of over 200km with a top speed of 80km/h. Torque is a healthy 290Nm, available instantaneously as is the usual hallmark of electric power. The lithium-ion battery pack is made up of 312 cells hidden under the floor meaning zero drawbacks in terms of cargo space, and the maximum load weight allowed is 1,709kg. The batteries can be recharged from flat to 80% capacity in 45 minutes, which is a big factor for delivery applications. The vehicle is also ready for future battery-power developments, and Volkswagen promises that ranges of up to 400km will be achievable.

Appearance-wise, the e-Crafter follows the corporate Volkswagen template for electric vehicles, featuring C-shaped daytime running lights, a new metallic Reef Blue paintjob and a blue bar on the front grille. Inside, the rev counter makes way for a power meter, and blue detailing finds its way onto the seats and leather steering wheel. The cargo area is kitted out with a host of Sortimo shelving and securing systems optimised for courier uses. While range and recharging constraints are still the main drawbacks for commercial EVs, the capacity of the e-Crafter will certainly make it an interesting proposition for potential customers, especially for city-based applications.
