Toyota recalls GT86 over power steering

Power steering issue could affect as many as 53 Irish GT86s.

What's the news?

Toyota in Australia has begun a recall of 15,000 Toyota GT86 coupes built between April 2012 and March 2015 for a possible power steering failure.

The GT86 uses electrically-boosted power steering, and the problem seems to affect only right-hand-drive cars fitted with a drivers' knee airbag. Apparently, the wiring for the power steering is chaffing on the cover for the airbag and potentially shorting out the system.

"If this happens," says Toyota, "there could be an electrical contact failure which may result in the loss of power steering assist. A warning light would then illuminate on the dashboard along with a short audible warning whilst manual steering would be maintained."

62 owners in Australia have been affected, but there have been no reported accidents nor injuries.

Between April 2012 and the end of 2015, Toyota sold 53 GT86s in Ireland, so there is potential for those owners to be affected too, but as yet Toyota Ireland has not made any specific announcement.
