Ford GT will come with optional carbon fibre wheels

Lighter wheels will further improve Ford’s new supercar.

What's the news?

It is still some time before any of the near-seven thousand people who registered their interest in buying a new Ford GT actually get their hands on one but Ford is already teasing prospective owners with some luscious performance-related accessories. The GT will feature some exotic materials in its construction but Ford has unveiled one option that many will want, carbon fibre wheels.

The clear-coated, bare carbon finish five split-spoke wheels will be offered with a choice of either gloss or matte finish to show off the weave of the carbon fibre. Built by its supply partner, Carbon Revolution, each 20-inch wheel saves 1kg in unsprung weight over the standard aluminium wheels but also reduces inertia by 25 per cent. That latter figure should further improve the handling characteristics of the V6-powered supercar. Ford also claims that the carbon fibre wheels also reduce noise, vibration and harshness levels leading to a quieter ride on the road.

Ford Performance's Global Director, Dave Pericak, added: "Ford GT will offer the next generation in carbon fibre wheels, with an advanced resin and fibre technology that gives our designers more freedom, while also showcasing the structure of the material's weave."
