Mazda to celebrate MX-5 milestone in Goodwood

One million Mazda MX-5 roadsters have been produced since 1989.

What's the news?

Mazda's MX-5 sports car has reached the landmark figure of one million cars produced. After 27 years, four generations, countless plaudits, the millionth car rolled off the line in Mazda's Hiroshima plant last Friday, cementing its record as the best-selling two-seat sports car ever.

The MX-5 was initially considered to be a risky move by Mazda upon launch, as the market for open-top sports cars had slumped by the late Eighties, but would turn out to be an inspired decision. Based on the Jinba ittai credo, which loosely translates to ''horse and rider as one'', the concept drew on the classic British roadster theme, and improved upon it drastically. Despite the car suffering from some unfavourable stereotypes, the driving experience appealed to one and all in its balance and sense of fun.

In a celebration of the production milestone, Mazda plans to exhibit the one-millionth car at events around the world, including this year's Goodwood Festival of Speed in the UK. Joining it will be the Speedster and Spyder concept cars from last year, this being the first time these models have been seen outside of North America. The Speedster follows a lightweight theme with carbon components aplenty, while the Spyder harks back to vintage roadster design. The Festival of Speed takes place from 23rd-26th June, and is well worth a visit for any petrolhead.
