15,395 cars sold under the scrappage scheme

April was the busiest month for the scrappage scheme to date.

Figures released by the Society of the Irish Motor Industry (SIMI) and compiled by the Revenue Commissioners show that 15,395 new cars have been sold as part of the Government scrappage scheme, far exceeding initial estimates of 10,000 vehicles.

Renault has been the most popular brand in the scheme with 19.43 percent of all new cars sold from the French brand. This is followed by Ford, Skoda, Volkswagen and Toyota.

April was the strongest month for the scrappage scheme, with 2,361 vehicles - or 15 percent of scrappage deals - being recorded in March, although this could be due to delays in dealers putting through the paperwork, which claim back the allowance from the Government.

The scrappage scheme is due to end on December 31, though SIMI is calling for the scheme to be extended into 2011.
