Mileage readings to be recorded by NCT

New NCT measures also allow for early test bookings.

What's the news?
Odometer readings taken during a car's NCT test will be recorded on the Certificate from today (July 28, 2014) thanks to new measures introduced by Applus+. The change has been announced alongside new, more flexible NCT booking, which will mean that owners no longer have to wait until 90 days before a test is due before making a booking.

Up to three previous odometer readings can be printed on a certificate making the practice of 'clocking' more difficult and giving peace of mind to those buying a used car. The news has been met with delight by long time anti-clocking campaigners, Cartell.ie: "We are delighted with the announcement by Applus+ that the most current NCT mileage readings are set to be included on the NCT Certificate. The consumer now has access to a valuable store of information which should further assist in curbing the criminal practice of vehicle clocking", said Jeff Aherne, Director, Cartell.ie.

Anything else?
Vehicle owners who wish to present their vehicle for inspection earlier than 90 days before their NCT due date will now be allowed to do so with the certificate issued from the date of test rather than a car's registration date. In order for a vehicle to be considered as presented voluntarily early, it must have an in-date, valid NCT test certificate or be younger than four years and 90 days. Cars younger than two years old can also be voluntarily tested, though they will not receive a certificate.
