Detroit 2013: concept previews new Honda SUV

Honda set to join the mini-crossover game with Jazz-based concept.

What's the news?
Honda looks set to join Nissan, Peugeot, Ford and Renault in the mini-crossover game with the Jazz-based Urban SUV Concept. Unveiled at the Detroit Auto Show the show car is based on the same platform as the forthcoming Jazz supermini replacement.

Exterior
The Urban SUV Concept, in Honda's words, showcases 'clean and sophisticated styling, dynamic lines and a strong stance.' Buzzwords aside it does feature an appealing blend of curves and a coupé-like roofline - a look enhanced by hidden rear door handles.

Interior
Based on the Jazz platform the Urban Concept will utilise Honda's original centre-tank layout that features on the Honda Jazz and will also incorporate Honda's famous Magic Seats that enable a range of seating configurations for added practicality.

Mechanicals
While not announced, the engine range is likely to mirror that of the new Jazz, which includes the new 1.6-litre i-DTEC diesel unit that will mean sub-100g/km emissions.

Anything else?
Officially, Honda says the concept 'hints at the styling direction' of an all-new small SUV, but with plans for a Japanese launch later this year we suspect the Urban, or the production model it inspires, will look a lot like this concept.
