Peugeot offers first glimpse of new E-5008 electric SUV

Details are scant, but Peugeot has confirmed an electric version of its 5008 family SUV.

Peugeot has released a brief teaser video showcasing the interior of its new E-5008 electric SUV. The video reveals some high-tech cabin updates, including a new infotainment system, but Peugeot has confirmed the electric model will get the same family-friendly seven-seat layout as the petrol-powered 5008 models.

Quick teaser

Peugeot's teaser video is very much just that: a tease. At just 18 seconds long, the footage doesn't reveal all that much about the new car, save for the fact the high-end GT version will be available, complete with some sportily styled seats trimmed with microsuede upholstery.

However, one or two highlights feature prominently, including Peugeot's new Panoramic i-Cockpit infotainment system. Perhaps taking inspiration from BMW's Curved Display, the system combines the widescreen instrument display and touchscreen into one 'floating' 21-inch panoramic screen that spans much of the width of the dashboard.

As well as offering the E-5008's cabin a more modern design (although much of the design appears to remain similar to that of the current model), the new screen is apparently "positioned for optimum ergonomics," and "slightly curved towards the driver, while remaining perfectly accessible to the passenger."

A new ambient lighting system also complements the system, the source of which is located beneath the screen, but which illuminates a swathe of dashboard that stretches across the front of the cabin.

Familiar stuff

While the video's highlights include the new screen and ambient lighting, as well as the sculpted and sporty seats, there are some more familiar features hiding in plain sight. First up is the steering wheel, which remains tiny by the standards of most family SUVs, and is apparently designed to give Peugeot's cars a more sporty feel. As with the existing 5008, the E-5008's steering wheel is positioned below the high-set instrument cluster.

Perhaps more importantly, Peugeot's teaser footage also confirms the new car will have three rows of seats, with two smaller seats in the back. How much room they will provide, given the inclusion of a battery pack that's presumably positioned under the floor, remains to be seen, but Peugeot has promised a "refined" interior with "easy access to a comfortable third row."

Electric power

As yet, Peugeot has not confirmed how the E-5008's powertrain will look, but the company has said it will be a fully electric SUV. Full details will be announced next month, but we're expecting to see the E-5008 go on sale alongside more conventionally powered versions of the family SUV.
